ScratchJr is a beginner-friendly programming language that allows young children (ages 5 and older) to build their own interactive stories and games. By connecting visual programming blocks, children can make characters walk, leap, dance, sing, and more. They can customize characters with the paint editor, record their own voices and sounds, and even add personal photos—then use programming blocks to bring their characters to life.

ScratchJr draws inspiration from the widely used Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), which is enjoyed by millions of young people (ages 8 and older) worldwide. For ScratchJr, we reworked the interface and coding language so they would be suitable for younger learners, thoughtfully developing features that correspond to children’s cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth.

We regard coding (or computer programming) as a new form of literacy. Writing helps people arrange their thoughts and communicate their ideas, and coding serves a similar purpose. Previously, coding was often considered too challenging for most individuals. However, we believe programming should be accessible to everyone, just like writing.

When young children program with ScratchJr, they learn to create and communicate using the computer rather than merely use it. Along the way, they practice problem-solving and project design while building sequencing abilities that support future academic achievement. They also apply mathematics and language within meaningful, engaging situations, helping strengthen early numeracy and literacy. With ScratchJr, children are not simply learning how to code; they are using code as a way to learn.

ScratchJr is the result of a partnership among the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. Two Sigma directed the development of the Android edition of ScratchJr. HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson produced the graphics and artwork for ScratchJr.
